I never said I hate you or any other smokers. I said I hate smoking. I go out of my way to avoid tobacco smoke. I grew up in the north where every restaurant, bar, hotel, house, outhouse, and building had at least a three-foot thick cloud of smoke up at the ceiling from all the people who smoked everywhere. My parents didn't, but all my relatives did. So I never liked leaving my house, it was a sanctuary where I could breathe and my eyes didn't burn.

Everyone has a right to smoke or not to smoke, and even better, they have a right not to be judged for it. So I'm not judging Tara as a person who I hate because she is a smoker. It's not like it's a terrible character flaw.

I know it's shallow of me, but I also have the right to decide what makes sex pleasant or unpleasant for me. I am so strongly driven by smell and taste when I'm with a woman and smoke detracts from that, it obscures some of the most wonderful parts I love. So there's really an unfortunate incompatibility there, especially if I don't have that depth of friendship and interpersonal warmth to fall back on, as I would with you.

And I do love you, especially how you call me on my crap. It takes strength to communicate as honestly as you do.
